Why Are My Eyes Red?

Have you ever looked in the mirror and felt your eyes looked red? Or do your colleagues often comment on your red eyes and say you look tired? It’s a common complaint we hear at Capital Eye.

There are many causes for red eyes. Usually, the delicate blood vessels in the conjunctiva become dilated due to irritation, which causes redness. The underlying irritation can be due to the following;

  • Dry Eyes: Dry eyes are widespread due to not producing enough tears or poor-quality tears.
  • Allergies: Hayfever or other allergies can lead to itchy red eyes with occasional mucous discharge.
  • Conjunctivitis: An infection often caused by bacteria or a virus which can lead to sore, irritated eyes with a mucous or watery discharge.
  • Contact Lens Wear: Overwearing contact lenses, sleeping in them or poor lens hygiene can lead to irritation and sometimes a more serious infection.
  • Injury or a foreign body can cause a scratch to the corneal or conjunctiva. This needs to be removed promptly to prevent any irreversible damage.
  • More Serious Conditions: Numerous other conditions can lead to red eyes, which can, but not always, be associated with pain or changes to vision.

What Should You Do If You Have a Red Eye?

We always recommend seeing an optometrist if you experience red eyes to definitively determine the cause of the red eyes and recommend the right treatment options. Simple things you can try at home to alleviate the symptoms include:

  • Removing any contact lenses
  • Use artificial tears if your eyes particularly feel dry and gritty
  • Use antihistamines if your eyes are itchy
  • Avoid eye-rubbing
  • Apply a cool compress

The Bottom Line

Red eyes are not always serious but can still cause irritation or discomfort. Good hygiene and simple treatments can be effective at relieving the symptoms. It is always essential, however, to consult your optometrist in Canberra, especially if your symptoms persist.
